Interpretations of Lucretius’ text varied widely, but in 1841 a young German philosopher named Karl Marx wrote his doctoral thesis on Greek atomism, using Lucretius’ poem as his primary text. Marx’s interpretation of Lucretius was highly heterodox in that it empha-sised all the things that most modern readers did not like in Lucretius, mostly notably his description of matter’s indeterminate swerve.
